Ashwagandha is also known as Withania somnifera, or Indian ginseng. In Sanskrit Ashwagandha means “the smell of a horse,” suggesting that the herb imparts the vigor and strength of a stallion.* It is widely used in Ayurveda. Ashwagandha belongs to the same family as the tomato and is a shrub with oval leaves and yellow flowers. It has red fruit about the size of a chickpea. It is often called Indian ginseng because, like ginseng, ashwagandha is a non-specific tonic and adaptogen.
